How much Bow Wow Premium Raw Pet Diet should I feed to my dog?
The formula used is to multiply your dogs ideal weight by 2% (4% for puppies) to give you the amount of food per day.
ie. 75 lbs. x .02 = 1.5 lbs food per day (6 Bow Wow Patties)
Each 30 lb box of Bow Wow Premium Raw Pet Diet conveniently contains 120 - 1/4lb frozen patties.
This formula is only an approximation as other variables such as metabolism, breed, activity level and present body fat, must be taken into consideration. Smaller breeds tend to eat more in relation to their body size while the larger breeds tend to eat less. We have some airedale terrier customers who are feeding their active pets 3 patties in the morning and 3 for dinner.
Maintaining your dog’s ideal weight is your responsibility as a pet owner. Though many dogs enjoy overeating, you must resist giving into this temptation, especially when supplementing their diet with high fat, processed foods. A dog's ribs should be palpable, but not visible. A slight waist can be observed behind ribs when viewed from above. The abdomen should be tucked up, flank fold present. Consult your veterinarian if you feel that your dog may be over or under weight.

Can I mix kibble with raw food?
We do not recommend mixing raw and kibble.
Raw dog food is processed though the digestive system correctly which means it is processed much quicker than kibble. Dogs are not designed to eat grains and cooked by-products which require a different pH in the gut to digest and the digestive system takes a long time to process them. When the two are fed together, kibble slows the digestion process and produces a ‘stewing’ effect where bacteria will remain in the gut for longer possibly causing food poisoning such as salmonella, etc..
+
Is there a risk of my dog getting salmonella by being fed a raw diet?
A dogs digestive system is very robust with very powerful digestive juices so when fed a natural raw food diet it digests quickly and easily in a dogs digestive system leaving little time to contract parasitic worms and bacteria.
When purchased the Bow Wow raw pet diet comes packaged frozen in a bag in the box. Take out what you need for your dogs feeding and keep the rest frozen. Handle your dogs raw diet just as you would handle any other type of meat that you would use in your house.
Wash your hands after handling. Do not leave any uneaten raw food left out as it will spoil just as any other meat product would.
Do not let your pet run around all over the house with the food. If your pet has the desire to run around the house with his raw pattie than you must thaw the food out completely and mash it in the bowl with a fork before feeding.
Our Bow Wow diets have been specially formulated by a veterinarian dietician to contain only essential ingredients that your dog requires. Feeding a raw diet has many health benefits and does not contain unnecessary fillers nor chemical preservatives and many other additives.
Is commercial pet food kibble safe? Please read the Pet Food Recalls section of the Born Free USA document "What really is in commercial pet food" and you will find many big brand name commercial kibble recalls for many reasons such as a fungus that produced vomitoxin contaminating the wheat, dry dog food contaminated with aflatoxin, excess DL-Methionine Amino Acid, a urinary acidifier, recalls due to Salmonella contamination, recalls because the cans’ enamel lining was flaking off into the food, metal tags were found in food samples, overdoses of Vitamin D that caused calcium deficiency and kidney disease.
In March 2007, the most lethal pet food in history was the subject of the largest recall ever. Menu Foods recalled more than 100 brands including Iams, Eukanuba, Hill’s Science Diet, Purina Mighty Dog, and many store brands including Wal-Mart’s. Thousands of pets were sickened (the FDA received more than 17,000 reports) and an estimated 20% died from acute renal failure caused by the food. Scientists discovered high levels of melamine, a chemical used in plastics and fertilizers, in wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China. The melamine had been purposefully added to the ingredients to falsely boost their protein content. Subsequent tests revealed that the melamine-tainted ingredients had also been used in feed for cows, pigs, and chickens and thousands of animals were quarantined and destroyed. In early May, scientists identified the cause of the rapid onset kidney disease that had appeared in dogs and cats as a reaction caused by the combination of melamine and cyanuric acid, both unauthorized chemicals. The fallout from this recall is ongoing as of May 2007 so please be sure to check the FDA website for the most recent updates.
This last recall is the very reason why you are reading this. Wanting our dogs to have the very best and to live a long healthy life, a name brand expensive dog food had to be the answer. This large recall scare led us to research how commercial kibble is made, what it may or may not contain and what we wanted to feed our dogs. For more info on salmonella and dogs click here

I would like to feed my dog the Bow Wow product. What is the best way to introduce this product to my pet?
Most cutomers switch a dogs food from kibble to raw cold turkey. Mixing a little kibble with the raw food is not recommended as kibble and raw are two completely different things. It is best to drop the kibble and pick up with the raw food. If possible donate any unused kibble to your local animal shelter.
Start off slow for the first feeding.
We recommend for the first feeding only to provide your dog with a half portion of its regular meal than provide its calculated portion for the next meal (dogs weight x .02 = daily serving. Divide daily serving in half for two meals per day. Monitor dogs weight and increase / decrease as necessary).
+
What is the percentage in volume of each ingredient?
Listing the percentage in volume of each ingredient would be disclosing our trade secret recipe which we can not do.
What we can tell you is that our ingredients are listed in order of greatest percentage of the diet to least. The meat portion of the diet makes up 75% followed by eggs and carrots. The glucosamine msm is in the diet in non medicinal volumes it is a natural joint therapy for animals. To add this at a therapeutic level would be difficult due to the large spectrum of dogs that are on the food. The amount of glucosamine for a full sized large breed dog like a Lab would be way to much for a mini or small breed dog. (also the stuff tastes horrible and if put directly in the food would make the food undesirable for your friend) We recommend that people who normally feed glucosamine msm to their dogs continue to do so even when they fed our diet.
Generally the Bow Wow Food Diet has no fillers, no water and was formulated by a dietician.
+
Are bones in the chicken diet and what part of the chicken is used?
98% of the chicken we use is the tube or frame of the bird. There are sometimes a few legs, wings backs and tails. The whole piece is ground up through a 1/4" plate and mixed with the other ingredients.

When can puppies be weaned to a raw diet?
Puppies less than four weeks old are best to be fed their own mothers milk. A nursing female's milk is higher in fat and protein that is essential to a puppies growth. The digestive system in a puppy less than four weeks old is not developed enough to digest any other whole food. A puppy that is less than four weeks old and is not getting a mothers milk should be fed a milk replacement formula.
Towards the end of the fifth week raw food can be introduced and added to a puppy's diet. Most puppies take to raw food readily. We recommend letting the frozen Bow Wow product thaw in the fridge overnight so that it is easy for the puppy to take.
If the puppy is already on processed food than you may slowly introduce the food and gradually increase the amount of raw food. DO NOT MIX COMMERCIAL KIBBLE WITH THE RAW FOOD. You may add some calcium to the diet in the way of goats milk or yogurt.
+
The dogs feeding portion seems small is this right?
Commercial dog food has many fillers such as grains, artificial flavors, chemicals, and preservatives. Commercial kibble has to be cooked at extremely high temperatures to remove all of the mosture from the kibble to avoid shelf rot. The kibble expands during the cooking process with most of the nutrients being "cooked off". Commercial kibble often has the nutrients sprayed on after the heat process. The Bow Wow Premium Raw Pet Diet is uncooked and condensed at its raw form with no fillers or undesirable extras which results in a smaller looking portion that is packed with only the good stuff.
+
Why feed raw biologically appropriate food?
We encourage you to research raw feeding and compare it to commercial kibble. We have experienced, first-hand, the positive changes in our dogs. As pet owners, it was quite a pleasant 'shock' to see the luxurious coat, clean teeth, and enhanced vitality in our dogs when we replaced a cooked, processed, grain-based kibble with Bow Wow Premium Raw Pet Diet.
Intense heat is used to process commercial pet food. This intense heat is required to remove all of the moisture so that the food can sit on the pet store shelf without going bad. This process destroys and reduces many nutrients like vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Pet food manufacturers have to replace this loss after the heat process with additives and sometimes spraying it on the kibble.
Commercial pet kibble often contains large amounts of grains which are inappropriate for a dogs digestive system. Poorly digested grains result in soft stools which enable secretions to build up. Feeding raw pet food will firm the dogs stools and naturally squeeze the anal glands during bowel movements.
+
Is there an increase risk of worms from a raw food diet?
The likelihood of of a dog getting worms from a raw diet, when purchased frozen from a manufacturer that uses high quality meat is slim to none. Dogs that eat a raw diet do not have a higher risk of getting worms any more than dogs on other diets. A dogs digestive system is very robust with very powerful digestive juices so when fed a natural raw food diet it digests quickly and easily in a dogs digestive system leaving little time to contract parasitic worms and bacteria. Worms can be picked up anywhere, anytime and dogs need to be dosed periodically no matter what you feed them.

I have noticed my dog drinking less water daily. Should I be concerned?
No, this is completely expected. Bow Wow Premium Raw Pet Diet provides food in its natural state, the mositure necessary for digestion is contained in the raw food. Because kibble has had the water/moisture removed during the high temperature manufacturing process, dogs constantly have to drink in an attempt to maintain proper hydration.
+
Will feeding my dog raw meat make it become aggressive and vicious?
This idea is a myth. There is NO relationship between eating raw meat and wanting to kill animals. Whole natural dog food is what dogs ate before the invention of kibble in the 1930's. Do you get wild or aggressive after eating sushi? Of course not! Feeding an animal the way nature intended will only ADD to its overall health and well-being.
Research does indicate, however, that behavioural problems may result from being fed an inadequate diet.
+
Will my dogs teeth get cleaner/more white?
Kibble sticks to a dogs teeth and enables bacteria to proliferate, causing bad breath, plaque and bacterial poisons that affect a dogs body.
One of the major benefits of using the Bow Wow Premium Raw Pet Diet product is that when fed frozen to your pet as an overwhelmingly majority of our customers do, your dog will get a great dental workout that cleans its teeth and prepares the digestive system for incoming food. The abrasion between the frozen food and the teeth when chewing scapes of dental plaque. The chewing action also strengthens the dogs jaw and keep the digestive juices flowing.
Many of our customers get compliments on how white their dogs teeth are.
NOW THAT'S SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT!

My dog no longer needs to have its anal glands expressed. Why?
Commercial pet kibble often contains large amounts of grains which are inappropriate for a dogs digestive system. Poorly digested grains result in soft stools which enable secretions to build up. Feeding raw pet food will firm the dogs stools and naturally squeeze the anal glands during bowel movements.

Is calcium and phosphorous in our Gourmet diets?
There are naturally occurring minerals in the raw food. Our Gourmet diet blends have been formulated by a veterinarian dietician to include everything that your dog requires. The analysis shows Calcium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium and Salt values in our diet. A dog fed raw shouldn't be deficient in minerals unless there is an already existing problem. That being said some vets may recommend supplementing calcium for pups but that may be based on a dry food diet. With the diet being raw and whole bone in, calcium should be readily available for the dog to obtain it naturally.
98% of the chicken we use is the tube or frame of the bird. There are sometimes a few legs, wings backs and tails. The whole piece is ground up through a 1/4" plate and mixed with the other ingredients. Other cuts have been tried but the fat content was too high and the average domestic dog doesn't work hard enough to appreciate the fat and acquire a taste for it.

Ingredients:
- CHICKEN (bone in) – the highest levels of essential fatty acids. We find chicken to be the best all round meat for dogs. It is a good source of protein and is easily digested by most dogs. The ground bones are a good source of calcium. Bones are living tissues that contain a wide variety of nutrients; vitamins, minerals, proteins, natural antioxidants (enzymes and anti-aging factors), and fats (essential fatty acids). The bone marrow is a highly nutritious mix of blood forming elements, such as iron.
- LIVER – full of nutrients; Vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, zinc, manganese, selenium, iron, as well as Vitamins B2, B3, B5, biotin, folacin, B12, choline, and inositol. Liver is a good source of protein and fatty acids, such as omega 3 and omega 6.
- EGGS – the perfect protein source. Eggs also contain high levels of calcium and all vitamins except Vitamin C, a high range of fatty acids, lecithin, and various enzymes. The egg yolk, is great for dogs with skin problems, as it contains sulphur containing amino acids, biotin, vitamin A, essential fatty acids and zinc.
-
CARROTS – rich in Vitamin A, beta carotene and other carotenes. Carrots are a strong antioxidant, containing Vitamins B, C, D, E, K, riboflavin, niacin, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and iron. Carrots have been proven to aid in improving eyesight.
- MOLASSES – an excellent source of iron, calcium and many other beneficial minerals
- APPLE CIDER VINEGAR – anti-bacterial and anti-fungal; it boosts the immune system. It improves stamina, increases resistance to diseases, prevents common infections, and is therefore helpful for dogs with weakened immune systems. Apple Cider Vinegar breaks down calcium deposits in a dog's joints and remineralizes the bones, and as such it is beneficial for dogs with arthritis and joint problems such as hip dysplasia. Apple cider vinegar also balances digestive enyzymes in the body, so it is a good remedy for food poisoning and digestive upsets such as intestinal gas and constipation. It also reduces fecal odors.
- PARSLEY FLAKES – besides the benefit of parsley freshening a dog's breath, parsley acts like an antioxidant in that it neutralizes the negative effects of the environment by eliminating toxins and maintains the elasticity of the blood vessels. It is very beneficial for the liver and digestive system. It also reduces stress levels in the endocrine system and provides a re-boot to the immune system. Parsley is a known expectorant, breaking up congestions in all areas of the eyes, nose, and mouth allowing normal function after many different ailments. This may help the mouth of certain breeds to become dryer and reducing their drool, as well as reducing motion sickness during travel.
- SUNFLOWER OIL – ultra high-quality sources of fat chosen for their skin & coat properties and are rich in linoleic acid and omega 3 fatty acids!
- BEET PULP – an excellent fiber source. The fiber from beet pulp has the benefits of adding bulk and moisture to animal stools while providing an energy source that can improve the health of the colon. Slow to moderately fermentable fiber sources, like beet pulp, are often recommended as one of the best sources of fiber for dogs and cats.
- MSM & GLUCOSAMINE – for healthy joints and ligaments for active and older dogs. Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM are several components that aid in the formation of the cushioning ingredients of the joint fluid, soft tissue and connective tissue areas. These nutrients work together with other macromolecules to make synovial fluid thicker and more elastic.
MSM provides more circulation to the affected areas, thus bringing in more of the nutrients that are needed for healthy joints. All the ingredients work together as natural anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling due to injuries or from sprains, strains or over-exertion.
